Description
This Daruma is a representation of Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen school, who is said to have sat in meditation in a cave for nine years.
A Daruma doll represents resilience and perseverance. The famous phrase associated with Daruma is “Nana korobi ya oki” (七転び八起き) “Seven time down, eight times up.” Daruma may be knocked over, but he always comes right back up. Our doll has a weighted bottom, so if you tap it, it will indeed come back to center!
The traditional use of a Daruma doll is to make a goal or intention for your life, large or small, and make a dot in one of Daruma’s eyes with a brush or a pen. You may want to write your intention down on a small piece of paper, roll it up, and place it inside the hollow Daruma doll.
Place your Daruma somewhere to remind you of your intention. When you have completed your intention, place a dot on the second eye, completing the Daruma and honoring the journey you’ve made.
All of our Darumas are sturdy and beautifully decorated, and made in Japan.
