Description
This kit will allow you to sew your own classic Rinzai rakusu. It is the custom in many traditions to sew one’s own rakusu. The rakusu is a small version of the kesa, so is an abbreviated representation of the Buddha’s original robe. You may choose a kit in a beautiful 100% cotton material, or a long-lasting poly/cotton twill and we offer blue or black in both materials.
You may also choose from the six different rakusu rings. We have the customary hard plastic rings imported from Japan, as well as five made here on Vashon island by local fine woodworker. Two are Classic Rings, which are the same on both sides, and hand finished with non-toxic finish. We offer three Artisan Rings, slightly thicker, and finer pieces, also finished with a non-toxic finish. The Rinzai Ring has approx. 2 ¾ diameter.
The rakusu is approximately 11” x 14” and the rakusu includes a light colored backing suitable for calligraphy.
Included with the kit is a detailed instruction manual, which was carefully created by our expert rakusu sewer and tested multiple times. We offer limited phone support for those new to sewing.
This item is intended only for those who have taken or will soon be taking Jukai (Buddhist precepts). When ordering we ask that you provide the name of your Buddhist lineage and teacher. Thanks!
